An interesting read, but of all the things they could have picked to include in that excerpt on Tristano, tape manipulation was the focus??? I'll never quite understand why any musicians or musicologists, jazz or otherwise, should have raised even half an eyebrow over those two octave morphed tracks. Lennie progressed over the years, like anyone else, and there came a point that his music was augmented by a new age of "electronic studio technology", two of which elements he availed himself of being the manipulation of tape speed and multi-tracking. This was 1955, just about the same time that an entire major sci-fi movie score was realized on the newly created RCA music synthesizer/computer, "Forbidden Planet". Being a pianist, first and foremost, Lennie had only scratched the surface of what others like Karlheinz Stockhausen had already been experimenting with, the composing of entire pieces being the multi-tracked manipulation of electronically altered acoustically produced sounds and controlled oscillations of newly produced synthesizers.
