Down Beat Oct. 16, 1969: LT —"I Listen To Rock"

Special "Keyboard Issue."

"I Listen To Rock" quote is on the cover, along with a small-ish photo of LT.

Article by Alan Surpin is entitled "Lennie Tristano: Feeling Is Basic..."

Article begins directly with Tristano quote, "I think Diana Ross is the greatest jazz singer since Billie Holiday" — a quote taken from the June 26, 1969 issue of Down Beat.

Here's one further brief quote from LT as recorded by Surpin:

"I listen to rock because it's part of the music, and I love music. Also, it gives me an idea of what's happening and a way to understand the young people and where their culture is at."

Very hip.

In this article, Tristano specifically singles out rock drummers for positive contributions to the world of music. However, he's not so keen on rock guitarists!
