Training was one of Tristano's main activities the whole time his life. He is frequently cited as one of the first to teach jazz improvisation, his teaching career spanned more than thirty years, and he invested much value and effort in that role. Considerably, teaching was how he made his living, enabling him to pursue his own musical interest without having to comply with the demands of the music industry, and thus providing him an alternative and uncompromising way of living as a jazz musician.
